Therapeutic Preschool Programs
For 50 years, countless parents and caregivers have come to The Children's Center with concerns about their child's emotional and behavioral issues. The compassionate and skilled professionals in our Therapeutic Preschool Program have been ready to help and have proven success in improving the lives of these children and their families.
Who Can Benefit from Our Therapeutic Preschool Program?
Our Therapeutic Preschool Program is for children ages 2 to 6 who are struggling with emotional or behavioral problems like:
- Temper tantrums
- Autism spectrum disorder
- Behavioral problems that are creating issues in a regular childcare or school program
- Traumatic experiences, such as abuse, neglect, domestic violence, community violence, or loss of parent(s) or caregiver(s)
These kinds of problems can affect how children behave, learn and grow, and may make it difficult for children to succeed in a traditional preschool. They can also strain family relationships at home.
Overview of the Therapeutic Preschool Program
Our Therapeutic Preschool Program is facilitated by highly skilled paraprofessionals who receive direct supervision from our licensed clinical staff.
Children receive treatment for three hours each day, either in the mornings or afternoons. Children are usually in treatment for an average of nine months to a year. However, we work closely with parents and caregivers to monitor a child's progress to determine when a child is ready to move to a regular preschool or daycare.
Parents and caregivers are invited to observe their children in this group setting. While observing, parents will see that the schedule resembles that of a regular preschool program with indoor and outdoor activities, art, circle time and snack time. They can also see the therapeutic interventions and how our staff is trained to help children:
- Communicate feelings to develop emotion regulation skills
- Gain control over their emotions
- Learn to play successfully with others and develop age-appropriate play skills
- Meet group expectations and learn to follow rules
Some parents worry that their child might get behind academically by attending our Therapeutic Preschool. We use a preschool curriculum throughout the day that helps children gain pre-academic skills that they will need to successfully enter kindergarten.
A child's problems often affect the whole family, so family therapy becomes an important addition to helping both a child and his or her family get back on track. Parent(s) and caregiver(s) meet with a clinician for family therapy for a minimum of once each month while a child participates in the Therapeutic Preschool Program.
During family therapy sessions, we share information about the child's progress and help parents and caregivers solve behavior problems that are impacting the overall family. Family involvement is a critical factor in their child's success.
Early intervention is essential to helping young children overcome behavioral and emotional problems. The Children's Center has an outstanding success rate with more than 90% of families reporting that relationships with their children have improved during the course of treatment.
Amazing changes happen every day for children in our Therapeutic Preschool! For further information, contact The Children's Center location nearest you.
